Why Are We Buying So Much Skincare?

During one of my train rides home, my serum slipped out of my bag and rolled onto the floor. Before I could reach for it, someone nearby laughed and asked, “Why do women buy so much skincare?” It wasn’t a malicious question, just one of those passing comments people make without thinking. But it lingered with me for the rest of the journey. By the time I got home, I found myself asking the same question: Why are we buying so much skincare?

Almost immediately, my mind began offering answers. Maybe beauty has become a form of self-care in a world that rarely slows down. Maybe social media has quietly redefined what “normal” skin should look like. Maybe the beauty industry has mastered the art of convincing us that we’re always one product away from perfect skin. Or perhaps skincare really does deserve all the attention it’s getting. There were so many possible explanations, and each one carried a little truth.

Yet, when I finally answered the question for myself, my response was surprisingly simple: I buy skincare because my skin has real needs. Not because a trend told me to, and not because I feel pressured to own every product on the shelf. Over time, I’ve learnt that understanding my skin is far more valuable than chasing every new launch. A healthy routine means buying intentionally, using what works, and resisting the urge to constantly replace products that are already doing their job. In many ways, skincare has taught me that consistency is always more rewarding than excess.

Looking back, I don’t think that stranger was really asking about skincare. It was a question about the choices we make and the lifestyles we build. Healthy habits, whether they’re caring for your skin, eating well, moving your body, or managing your finances. These are rarely about doing more; they’re about doing what works for you, consistently. Perhaps there isn’t a single answer because behind every cleanser, serum, or moisturiser is a different story. Mine simply reminds me that when I make intentional choices in one area of my life, it becomes easier to be intentional in others too. Maybe that’s where real beauty begins.
