Why Every Woman Should Travel Alone at Least Once

The first time I travelled alone, I remember checking my phone far more often than I used to. I kept reaching for it to tell my sister , my friend , my mom , someone where I was, what I had eaten, or what I had seen. It took me a while to realise that I wasn’t actually lonely. I was simply unused to experiencing something without immediately sharing it. Somewhere between navigating unfamiliar streets, looking up restaurants online, hoping my Uber was taking me to the right place, and deciding every part of my itinerary on my own, I discovered a different kind of company: my own.

Travelling alone gave me room to think. There was no one else’s opinion to consider but my own. I didn’t have to compromise on the itinerary, debate where to eat, or convince anyone to try something new. If I wanted to spend an extra hour in one place, I did. If I changed my mind halfway through the day, that was okay too. For once, the trip wasn’t about creating memories for other people. It was about enjoying the experience for myself.

It was in those quiet moments that I began to notice the little things: a conversation with a local, a café tucked away on a quiet street, or the satisfaction of finding my way after taking a wrong turn. I learnt to trust my instincts, make decisions with confidence, and embrace the unexpected. Solo travel isn’t always glamorous, but it teaches you to be present. Without even realising it, I stopped worrying about whether the trip looked exciting and started paying attention to how it actually felt.

People often think solo travel is about independence, but I think it’s really about self discovery. It introduces you to the version of yourself that exists outside your routine, responsibilities, and the expectations of everyone around you.
