"Sleep while you can."
It's probably one of the first things people say when they find out you're pregnant.
They tell you childbirth will be painful, but the joy of holding your baby will make it all worthwhile. They warn you about endless diaper changes, sleepless nights, breastfeeding, the exhaustion that comes with caring for a newborn, the baby weight, the first smile, the first steps, and how quickly the years will fly by. They tell you your social life may never be the same. They remind you to cherish every moment because children grow up so quickly. And, of course, they tell you to sleep while you can because you'll never be this well-rested again.
While all of that is true, it still doesn't really prepare you for motherhood.
Because motherhood isn't simply about giving birth or learning how to care for a baby. It's about becoming someone entirely new.
Motherhood isn't just the birth of a child.
It's also the birth of a mother.
To be fair, I could end this piece right here.
But let's continue for a little longer.
No one tells you that you'll carry an invisible mental checklist every single day. You'll remember vaccination dates without setting reminders. You'll know your child is coming down with an illness before the thermometer confirms it. You'll plan meals, pack spare clothes, carry snacks "just in case," and think three steps ahead so everyone else doesn't have to.
No one tells you that you can love your child more than life itself and still miss the woman you were before. You don't go back to her, not because she's gone, but because motherhood changes her forever. You'll learn that gratitude and exhaustion can exist in the same breath, that joy and worry often arrive together, and that you'll question yourself more times than you can count. You'll carry guilt over the smallest decisions and constantly wonder if you're doing enough.
Oh, my.
Motherhood is full of contradictions.
It stretches your patience, reshapes your priorities, and transforms your identity in ways you could never have imagined. It asks more of you than you think you have to give, yet somehow reveals strength you never knew existed.
Motherhood is truly extraordinary.
Perhaps that's why no one can truly prepare you for it. Not because people don't try, but because some experiences cannot be explained.
They simply have to be lived.
